The start of a new presidential administration always brings changes in policy and direction, and energy is no exception. The decisions made in Washington over the coming years will have significant impacts on the future of America’s electric grid. For Oklahoma’s electric cooperatives, our focus remains clear: ensuring reliable, affordable electricity for the communities we serve.

The reliability of our nation’s electric grid is at a crossroads. Critical power generation resources are being retired faster than they can be replaced, all while electricity demand is rising due to growing industries, data centers and new manufacturing facilities. The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) recently warned that many regions face an elevated risk of electricity shortfalls, particularly during extreme weather events. As Oklahomans, we understand the impact that ice storms, heat waves and severe weather can have on our infrastructure. The need for a resilient energy plan has never been greater.

As the national discussion on energy unfolds, electric cooperatives are advocating for policies that prioritize reliability, affordability and energy diversity. We are engaging with federal agencies, Congress and the administration to address regulatory hurdles that slow down critical infrastructure projects. This includes working to streamline outdated permitting laws, ensuring that new transmission and generation projects can move forward efficiently.

A balanced approach to energy policy is crucial. While renewable energy sources like wind and solar are valuable components of our energy mix — especially here in Oklahoma —there must also be recognition that baseload power from fossil fuel sources play a key role in ensuring the grid remains stable. Electric cooperatives are also working to maintain federal programs and tax incentives that help keep electricity costs manageable for our members and expand broadband access to underserved areas.

Advocacy has long been a strength of Oklahoma’s electric cooperatives, and we will continue to make sure policymakers understand the needs of rural members. Our commitment to keeping the lights on and supporting local economic growth remains unwavering. As changes unfold in Washington, we will stay engaged, working to ensure that energy policies support the families, farms and businesses that depend on us every day.

The strength of the electric cooperative movement lies in our collective voice and commitment to our members. By standing together, we can navigate the evolving energy landscape and build a resilient future for Oklahoma’s co-op communities.
