Fire Ball Foundation

The Fire Ball Foundation exemplifies dedication to community service and support for Ottawa County’s volunteer firefighters. Formed to provide critical resources, the foundation raises funds through events like its annual Fire Ball, which brings together businesses, individuals and local heroes in a collective effort to strengthen emergency response capabilities.

At the 2024 Fire Ball event, the foundation raised over $32,000 through live and silent auctions and event sales. These funds directly impacted local fire departments by awarding five full scholarships to area firefighters for EMT and Firefighter 1 classes. The funds will also cover the cost of a specialized training course on risk-based responses for all county firefighters and provide financial support to each volunteer fire department in Ottawa County for their operational needs.

The foundation also honors exemplary service through its annual Red Line and Gold Line awards, recognizing outstanding firefighters and dispatchers, reflecting the foundation’s commitment to celebrating those who dedicate their lives to protecting the community.

Led by a passionate board and committee, the Fire Ball Foundation ensurets every dollar raised serves their mission: to remember the past, support the present and invest in the future of fire service in Ottawa County.

Teaching is a calling Donna Osman has answered with unwavering passion for 30 years. With a classroom filled with eager young learners, Donna’s days are not defined by obligation but by opportunity.

“It’s not that I ‘have’ to go to work; it’s that I ‘get’ to go to work each day,” she says with a smile.

After marrying and raising her two sons, Donna returned to college at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah to earn her degree in early childhood education. Her commitment to education was fueled by a simple yet profound belief: the early years are pivotal.

“Early childhood is the time to lay a strong foundation for learning,” she explains. “That’s what I strive to do every day. I have high expectations for both myself and my students, and I always try to make learning fun. If I’m not having fun, I know they’re not either.”

Donna’s classroom is a joyful space where curiosity is encouraged and diversity is celebrated. Most recently her students are learning selected words and counting to 20 in Cambodian, inspired by a classmate’s heritage. It’s this thoughtful attention to detail that makes her students, who she calls, “Awesome Osmans,” feel seen and valued.

“She’s a true ‘American Honey,’” says Erin Hill, a Northeast Electric Cooperative employee who knows Donna’s work well. “Donna’s influence goes beyond the classroom. Her warmth, kindness and energy create a ripple effect in her community.”

As Donna says, “Children won’t remember that you taught them to read and write, but they’ll remember the fun you had together.”

Coop’s Fast Lube and Tire

Coop’s Fast Lube and Tire isn’t your average auto shop. For Jeannie Cooper and her husband Doug, it’s never been just about oil changes, tire rotations or maintenance. It’s about community, faith and making a difference — one car and one person at a time.

Doug Cooper’s journey began in the high-octane world of professional drag racing. As a race car mechanic, he would fly to races and work under intense pressure. He and Jeannie began their car repair shop part time and transitioned to running their business full time in 1992. By 2005, Coop’s shifted to maintenance services — specializing in oil changes and tires — and moved to Main Street.

The Coopers say they built their reputation on integrity and Christian values.

“This industry can take advantage of people, but we’ve always focused on character,” Jeannie says.

Doug’s care extended beyond car repairs. “He’d notice when someone needed more — a hug or a prayer,” Jeannie recalls. “People would come back years later to tell us how much those moments meant to them. It’s not just a business; it’s a way to serve the community.”

Their motto, “We can change your oil, but God can change your life,” reflects this mission.

“Every employee becomes part of the family and works together as a team. And we have the best!” Jeannie says.

Now semi-retired, Doug has passed the day-to-day operations to their son, Keith. But the values that built Coop’s remain at its core. With six employees and a thriving customer base, the shop continues to prioritize relationships over transactions.

For Jeannie, the meaning of success is simple.

“It’s not about money,” she says. “It’s about people. It’s about creating a place where the love of God shines through in everything we do. That’s the heart of Coop’s Fast Lube and Tire.”
