SKIE Awards celebrate Oklahoma teachers leading the way with technology and creativity

Oklahoma’s electric cooperatives are proud to sponsor the annual K20 Innovative Learning Institute award, which recognizes educators who excel at linking student learning with the innovative use of technology and the K20 IDEALS. Presented by the K20 Center, this award honors teachers who demonstrate creativity and leadership in education across five regions of the state.

Sherry Hofen, Northwest
As a seventh and eighth grade science and geography teacher at Oklahoma Bible Academy in Enid, Sherry Hofen inspires students to think critically about global issues. Her inventive approach to teaching encourages students to brainstorm solutions to real-world problems. From color-changing nail polish to monitoring blood sugar to a device for removing kidney stones, her students’ projects showcase creativity and innovation.

Kimberly Hutcheson, Northeast
Kimberly Hutcheson, a first grade teacher at Darnaby Elementary in Tulsa, shows students how to use Scratch JR to bring their stories to life and research endangered penguins, culminating in the symbolic adoption of an emperor penguin. Beyond the classroom, Kimberly leads school committees, sponsors clubs and organizes community events like family-friendly 5Ks, ensuring every family can participate regardless of socioeconomic status.

Jennifer Blevins, Central
With 23 years of experience, Jennifer Blevins teaches social studies to 11th and 12th graders at Southmoore High School. She emphasizes the importance of civic engagement and understanding government systems. As a mentor to new teachers and sponsor of the school’s youth and government program, Jennifer empowers both students and colleagues to be active participants in democracy and lifelong learners.

Cashe Turner, Southwest
Cashe Turner, a fifth grade math and science teacher at Empire Elementary in Duncan, is known for making challenging concepts accessible through active learning. Her commitment to building strong community ties is evident in her use of social media to showcase student achievements and engage families. Cashe believes that education is a shared journey, bringing together students, families and the broader community.

Bay Engler, Southeast
At Haworth Elementary, Bay Engler teaches STEAM to Pre-K–fifth graders with a focus on hands-on learning and problem-solving. From hatching chickens to building trash grabbers with LEGO sets, Bay’s classroom connects students with the world around them.
