Passing the Torch
Oklahoma Living editor closes a chapter 10 years in the making.
A little over 10 years ago, I introduced myself to you, Oklahoma Living readers, as your new editor. As a native of Brazil (now a proud U.S. citizen), achieving the dream of becoming editor of such an endearing publication had always seemed out of reach. You see, English is not my native language, but with God’s help (plus perseverance, patience, and endurance), the nearly impossible became possible.
Growing up in Brazil, I vividly remember how hard my parents worked to provide a better future for me and my brothers. Their purpose—and their example—instilled in us one core value: “Trust God and give your best in all you do.”
Today, as I contemplate a new chapter before me, these words couldn’t be truer. While this column does not mark a “goodbye,” it is my last column as editor of the magazine. The year of 2021 brings changes to our publication. Our longtime publisher, Sid Sperry, is retiring from the electric cooperative industry after 40 years of service. Sid has been a dedicated publisher and a loyal mentor to our staff. He will be dearly missed, and his contributions will continue to shape our publication for years to come. With his retirement, I have been privileged to be named the magazine’s new publisher. I thank God for this opportunity, and I will serve enthusiastically and with great passion in this role—giving my very best.
I’m honored to pass the torch of editor to Hayley Leatherwood who has served our publication for nine years as our multimedia specialist. Hayley has a genuine passion for our magazine and for serving our readers with excellence and kindness. She will carry on a legacy of service and her leadership will continue to make our publication relevant and cherished by many. We are also thrilled to welcome Lance Shaw of Chickasha, Oklahoma, as our new multimedia specialist. Lance has a sincere appreciation for the magazine and is excited to serve you, our valued readers.
Although there are some staffing changes at our magazine, what remains the same—or even stronger—is our desire to serve you by providing a source of information that builds up our communities, highlights quality of life in Oklahoma, and celebrates the contributions of Oklahoma’s electric cooperatives. Thank you for reading. We look forward to continue serving you by giving you our very best.
