The Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives (OAEC) Directors Association recently hosted its annual banquet, raising an impressive $45,000 for the Cooperative Family Fund. This unique initiative supports children of cooperative employees who pass away during their tenure, offering them ongoing care and resources to navigate life’s challenges.

Through this fund, children receive a memory book filled with cherished stories and photos of their parent from coworkers, a lasting tribute to their parent’s legacy. The fund also provides ongoing support like birthday cards from the cooperative. In addition, the fund establishes an investment account with a one-time payment of $10,000. At age 18, each child receives the account in full as a monetary gift to help with college, career goals or other milestones as they step into adulthood.

“The money will never replace a parent, but the survivors will know that people care,” founder and president Tony Anderson says. “That is how we make the world just a small bit better.”

Since its creation in December 2022, the Cooperative Family Fund has become a vital source of comfort and hope. In just two years, the nationwide cooperative family has lost 30 employees in 17 states that have left behind 64 kids ranging in age from 4 months to 17 years. Already, three Oklahoma families have been supported through this initiative.

“I’m incredibly proud that Oklahoma exceeded its fundraising goal this year,” says James Wells, Central Rural Electric Cooperative board director. “The Cooperative Family Fund holds a special place in my heart because it shows how deeply we care for the families who are part of our cooperative community.”

Chris Meyers, OAEC CEO, added, “This event is a reflection of our values as cooperatives. Each contribution is a testament to the compassion and generosity of our community.”

Donations from individuals and organizations ensure this mission continues, helping families feel embraced by the cooperative community and providing a hint of light even during their darkest moments.
