Instead of booking a standard hotel or a typical cabin in the woods for the next trip in Oklahoma, why not stay somewhere truly unique.

From old shipping containers that are discarded after two uses to forgotten grain silos to even underground wartime buildings, repurposed real estate has become a popular trend in recent years. From abandoned churches to old factories and schools, these buildings are being transformed into modern homes that breathe new life into historic structures.

These unique stays in Oklahoma are among some of the most creative. For your next vacation, check out these three unique vacation rentals that are sure to make memories.

The Silo at Tenkiller

Just a stone’s throw from Lake Tenkiller State Park and the Pine Cove Marina, The Silo is a large, open-concept vacation rental that sleeps up to six. Built within a true silo, The Silo combines luxury and breathtaking architecture with historic homage, all within the pristine forests surrounding Lake Tenkiller in Vian.

With three bedrooms and two bathrooms, The Silo includes one king bed in the master suite, a queen bed in the second bedroom and two twin beds in the third bedroom. The large, open living area is perfect for family game nights or leisurely coffee in the morning, and the outdoor area comes complete with an outdoor grill, a deck, outdoor dining and seating and a private yard.

“Grain bins are some of the oldest, most durable structures standing the test of time around the world. The idea of staying in a unique structure like a silo and sharing it with others, creating a memorable experience, excited us the most,” said owners Pras and Ben Sekar. “We take a lot of pride in being able to own and share The Silo.”

It’s also just steps to Big Daddy’s On the Lake Restaurant and surrounded by easy-to-reach hiking trails for outdoor adventure.

Atlas F Missile Silo in Hobart

In Hobart, visitors can opt to travel back to the 1960s when the Cold War was raging, spurring the U.S. to create the Atlas F Missile Base complex. That complex, which featured an underground launch control center and a utility tunnel leading to the 176-foot deep missile silo, is now a cozy three-story underground home.

As one of the most unique bed and breakfasts in the nation, the Atlas F Missile Silo is also home to the All Things Atlas Library. A full tour of the missile complex and a history of the Atlas Missile system is included with the cost of stay as well.

The main guest room is located 37 feet underground on the third level, which also includes the kitchen and main bathroom. With two twin beds, a 55” 4K Roku TV and 4K UltraHD Blu-ray player, a remote control ceiling fan and a desk work area, the room is also set with wireless internet and cellular.

The whole former Atlas F ICBM Missile Silo complex also offers tent camping and RV camping, but the underground area is accessed via an entryway and stairwell that is part of the original missile base.

For lovers of military history or hidden underground structures, this is an opportunity to stay at an authentic missile silo base.

InnHabit in Medicine Park

InnHabit in
Medicine Park

In southwest Oklahoma’s quirky little resort town of Medicine Park, Oklahoma’s first tiny house resort adopts the cobblestone and artist community vibe. InnHabit combines re-purposed shipping containers into 10 stationary tiny houses for rent. While the metal shipping containers are traditionally used to ship goods across the ocean, they now have new life as uniquely-decorated single-level tiny houses. Some are stacked on top of one another, and five of the homes have rooftop decks.

“We are a small family-owned business, and we built
InnHabit from the ground up, so we are happy to share it with others,” said owners Julie and Noel Alsbrook.

“The 10 tiny house studio rentals are made from shipping containers, as well as a grain bin gazebo with a fire pit for guests.”

Onsite, the InnHabit community also has a donut shop, a pet boutique, a panini and smoothie shop, a cigar shop, a popcorn shop, a wood-fired pizzeria and a craft beer tap room.

“While InnHabit has most everything guests might want onsite, it is also within easy walking distance to other shops and restaurants, the Medicine Creek walk and Bath Lake,” Julie says. “InnHabit is a great place to stay and play with family and friends.”

Each tiny home has amenities similar to hotel rooms, including queen-sized beds, bathrooms and kitchenettes. Eight of the tiny houses also include a full-sized trundle bed underneath the main queen bed, and the remaining two tiny houses are fully ADA accessible.

“So whether you are considering downsizing to a tiny house, or you just want to see what the tiny house excitement is about, InnHabit has a tiny house for you,” Alsbrook says
